This research is under the guidance of Dr. Umar Fauzan, M.Pd., as the first advisor, and Dra. Sitti Hadijah, M.Pd., as the second advisor.
Learning English requires precise tips and methods so that students are capable, of writing, reading, listening, and speaking. Speaking is an activity that combines all the elements of ability that students have in mastering vocabulary, word order, or sentences and combining ideas in their minds with the will or ability to express them. This identifies that learning English is not just learning vocabulary and grammar in the sense of knowledge, but must try to apply and use in daily activities as a communication tool.
This study is qualitative approach. The subjects of this research were ten students from the tenth grade of MAN 2 Kutai Kartanegara who got the highest score in speaking practice. The main instruments were interview guide and documentation. Then the data was analyzed  using  the  steps  of  analysis  referred  to  Lexi  Maleong.  The data analysis  is descriptive qualitative.
The findings of this research are students’ strategies in learning speaking at MAN 2 Kutai Kartanegara. This is supported by the research results, The researcher revealed that the students had been implementing some strategies. The strategies were direct strategies, memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, indirect strategies such as metacognitive strategies, emotional strategies, and social strategies. The only variation is the number of students who apply the ways of each group's strategies and the approach used in the group.</note>
