Students’ Perception Toward Their Self-Confidence For Speaking Performance In The English Education Department Of UINSI Samarinda In Academic Year 2023/2024

This research is under guidance of Mrs. Rostanti Toba, M.Pd as the first advisor, and Mrs. Dini Irawati, M.Pd as the secound advisor. Speaking is one of the most influential skills in a modern English context. Whether the language learners want to express to to just impress, speaking remains one of the most promising things to master, not in just English, but also all languages. Lately, the concern of speaking has been on why people including students find it hard to do, although in the real of speaking and others they excel. One of the most prominent factors to affect such inability is the absence of self-confident in doing English speaking. This research aims (1) to find the students percetion of their self-confidence in speaking performance, (2) factors that contributes to their self-confidence, and the last of three is (3) to find the most dominan factor that influence their self-confidence in speaking performance. This research used a descriptive quantitative method. The instrument of this research was questionnaire. The kind of questionnare that used this research was close-ended question that consist 16 questions related to the factor that influence their self-confidence in speaking performance. The population of this research was the fourt semester students of English Department in UINSI Samarinda in academic year 2023/2024. The result of this research proved that students’ perception of their self-confidence in speaking is centralized on the psychological factors rather than linguistic factor. The psychological factor collected a total score of 1178, and average at 147,25 while the linguistic factor only collectively has a total score 1153 with the average point of 144,12. The psychological elements that emerged in Englisg languauge learners were fear og making mistake, shyness, anxiety, and lack of motivation. Grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency are the linguistic factor.
