Need Analysis is one of the branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) study, which discuss the first step in applying ESP at a certain education level by analyzing the students’ needs in learning English. ESP is generally applied in the vocational school level or the institution in which the students have already known the purpose of their study. Therefore, need analysis research is applied in the vocational school level. The vocational school has different programs, one of them is the Marketing program. English for the students of marketing program is important, because the increasing of the global market is demanding the businesses workers to equip themselves with English. Nevertheless, English taught at SMK, especially at SMKN 14 Samarinda still applied general English course. Thus, this research carried out to know the needs of English materials for Marketing students, by identifying the target needs and learning needs of the students in learning English to develop materials and apply English for Marketing Purposes.
The design of this research was qualitative. The instruments used were questionnaires, interviews, and documentations to know the students’ responses towards their needs in learning English. The questionnaires distributed to twenty- four X Marketing 1 students, whereas, the interview was conducted by interviewing the English teacher and ten students of X Marketing 1. The documentations were in the form of textbooks, syllabuses, and the evidences has conducted the research in the form of images of research activity.
The result showed in the target needs, there were three aspects, namely necessities, lacks of English, and wants. In the necessities aspect, the students needed English for their future marketing workplace. As a result, in the lacks of English aspect, they needed to improve their English skills and part of speech because they had lack on those skills. It was also appropriated with the wants aspect, because they wanted to improve those skills, as well as having English for Marketing Purposes course. In the learning needs aspect, There were five aspects, namely inputs, procedures, settings, teacher’s role, and learners’ roles. In the input and procedure aspects, the students needed English materials and learning activities related to their study program to support them in the workplace later. In the settings aspect, the students needed conducive classroom situation and they also preferred to work on the task in a group. In the teacher’s role aspect, the students preferred to have the teacher as a facilitator and created an active teaching and learning process. In the learners’ roles aspect, the students preferred to be the active and responsive students.</note>
