This research aims to find out the extent of students' speaking skills in the teaching and learning process and its effectiveness in appearing in a class by using storytelling techniques as a medium in the learning process. The participants of this research were 32 class VIII B students of SMP Negeri 25 Samarinda.
The method used in this research is classroom action research (CAR). The class action research design used in this research is spiral model class action research. This research was carried out following the Kemmis & MC Taggart. There are four stages in each circle, the four stages are planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of four meetings. Data collection techniques in this research used instruments: an observation checklist, test, and questionnaire.
The results of the research showed that the students' mean scores on the pre-test and post-test were significant, the students' pre-test scores were 67.0 and the post-test scores were 80.1. In addition, the p-value test (p=0.000) from the significant test results was p<0.05. Based on the analysis data, the researcher find that storytelling technique can improve student speaking skills in the learning process. In conclusion, the storytelling technique succeeded in improving students' speaking skill.</note>
