English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Islamic University of Samarinda. This research was under the guidance of Mr. Dr. Umar Fauzan, M. Pd as the first advisor and Mrs. Nadia Sya’ya, M. Pd., M. TESOL as the second advisor. The background of this study was to find out the linguistic content, namely lexical and contextual meaning in the sentences selected from the book “Map of the Soul chapter persona”. Lexical and contextual meanings were both sub-branch of semantics, used to describe meanings which can be easily found anywhere, especially in books or literature works. The objectives of this research were to know the lexical meaning found in the sentence chosen from the book and the contextual meaning that occurs in the sentence with four types of context. This research used the descriptive qualitative design to analyze and interpret the objective of the study. The source of data was the book “Map of the Soul” and the data were sentences from the chapter “Persona”. The instrument of this research was the researcher herself. The data were collected from sentences in the chapter that have semantically items. The data then be analyzed and interpreted to draw the conclusion. There were two findings in this research. Firstly, the lexical meaning showed that nine words were chosen from the book “Map of the Soul Chapter Persona” were had a basic meaning that could not explain what message the sentences wanted to deliver, for example, the word “face” lexically means “the front part of the head from the forehead to the chin”. Secondly, the contextual meaning showed from nine words chosen seven words able to be explained by topical context, nine words by local context, seven words by sentential context, and six words by the global context. The result of this study showed that not all types of context were able to explain the words in the sentences chosen from the book “Map of the Soul Chapter Persona”.
