Reading is thinking, understanding, and getting at the meaning behind the text. The students find difficulties in understanding a reading text because they have less ability to mastery vocabulary, and feel bored in learning English. LRD is a strategy designed for learning reading comprehension. Students get provisions from the listen step before reading so that when reading students, become easier to get the right ideas and facts about reading. Therefore, this research aims to find out whether the teaching reading that use LRD (Listen-Read-Discuss) strategy is able or unable to improve the reading comprehension of the second grade students at MTs Al-Mujahidin 2 Samarinda Seberang.
In this research, the researcher used a quasi-experimental design. The researcher used two classes: class VIII A as the experiment class, which uses the LRD strategy, and class VIII B as the control class, using the direct method. The treatment has been given five times for both classes. The material taught is descriptive text. The instrument used is a written test in the form of multiple choice, amounting to 22 items. At the end of the meeting, the researcher gave the post-test.
The results of the research showed that the LRD strategy is able to improve the students’ reading comprehension in the second grade at MTs Al-Mujahidin 2 Samarinda Seberang. This is demonstrated by the difference between the mean scores of the students in the pre-test experimental class (56.3) and the post-test (79). The results of the t-test calculation evidence this obtained a sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05. It can be concluded that Ha is accepted. It means that the LRD strategy is able to improve reading comprehension for second-grade students at MTs Al-Mujahidin 2 Samarinda Seberang.</note>
